DEFENDERS Celebrates 300th Homes of Hope Build!

INDIANAPOLIS – June 8, 2017 – Space to grow a family. A home to call their own. This is why DEFENDERS partners with Homes of Hope to give back to families in Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Over Memorial Day weekend, 86 volunteers traveled to Rosarita to build five new homes that will give local families the independence that they need. This is the 300th Homes of Hope build that DEFENDERS has led.

“This volunteer experience is so much more than simply building a house,” stated Joi Riley, Director of Engagement. “Our team members and their families see firsthand how something that we take for granted every day can change someone's life forever.”

Our volunteers work alongside the future homeowners and their families. Building these homes can have a tremendous impact on a family for several generations, because it breaks the cycle of homelessness.

Families who receive these homes experience:

  • Improved overall health and wellbeing – reduces incidence of sickness due to dirt floors and exposure – improves overall quality of life
  • Increased emotional stability – home life & marriage are strengthened because basic survival issues are eliminated
  • Improved economic standing – family funds can go toward resources like education rather than treating sick children or temporary housing
  • Increased opportunity for educational advancement – stable environment encourages learning & they are more likely to attend and stay in school
